  Queen Suriyothai Shrine

Thailand

Statue of Queen Suriyothai at the Queen Suriyothai Memorial Shrine in Ayutthaya. This Queen was the royal consort of King Chakraphandi and she was killed in battle trying to protect her husband, during the 1549 war with Burma.

Because of this heroic deed, the Queen posthumously became a popular heroine and this shrine was erected in the former rear palace of Ayutthaya, adjacent to the Queen Suriyothai Pagoda (fig.), a bell-shaped redented chedi (fig.), that contains her ashes.
