Monitor lizards have a long, forked tongue, used for detecting scent, nostrils for breathing only and large holes for hearing, at the back of their head. They use their snake-like tongues to detect taste by smelling scent particles in the air.

This allows them to determine which direction a scent is coming from. They can pick up scents for well over a kilometer away.
