PREVIOUS BIRD NEXT BIRD Thailand

Though nowadays rare in inland regions, here is a Brahminy Kite hunting over the Moon River in Ubon Ratchathani.

As soon as it has spotted its prey it folds its wings and lurches into a dive, the head down.

Without loosing its focus on the prey it closes in for the kill at full speed.

Just before hitting the surface, it changes its angle of approach and plunges in with its feet first, and then uses all the strength it has to dodge from the water and lift off again.

It slowly regains speed and height, firmly holding on to the fish it has caught.

Fully airborne again, it now gradually glides back into cruising mode.

Then, it eats the catch whilst still on the wing.
