In Lower Burma, due to its association with the local legend of the female buffalo nat Nankarine (fig.), mock buffaloes are used, rather than elephants as in the Kyaukse Sain Pwe festival (fig.).

 

People dresses up in these animal costumes go around in order to collect donations for local Buddhist temples and other religious purposes, both from homes and shops, as well as from traffic passing by.
