PROVINCIAL ESCUTCHEON

Mae Hong Son

The coat of arms of Mae Hong Son shows an elephant in the water. In the past this region was known for its people who were skilled in training young elephants caught in the wild. The province name is most likely derived from an enclosed mountain range or ‘room’ (hong) to which at the time wild elephants were driven to be tamed and trained (son).
