In Diyu, the wicked are tortured by the devils in hell to atone for their earthly sins.

 

For each sin, their is a befitting punishment, however, for the kind souls, also Bai Wu Chang (fig.) stands ready (fig.) to provide safe passage and circumvent all this cruelty.

In this diorama, Ma Mian, i.e. Horse-Face’ (fig.), can be seen using his trident to torture the soul of a wicked person.
