Emerald Doves get their name from their back and wings, which are bright emerald green. Males have a white patch on the top edge of the shoulders and a grey crown, while females tend to have a browner complexion with a grey mark on the shoulder (fig.).

Both sexes have a brown tails red bill and pink legs and feet.
