	Nakhon Ratchasima shows the statue of queen
Suranari (fig.) 
 in front of the
Chumphon 
gate (fig.). 
This ancient city in the past consisted of two parts, namely ‘meuang sema’ 
to the South of the Lam Taklong river, and ‘meuang  koram phra’ to the North of 
it. The gate is of old the symbol of this historic city and refers possibly 
to the fact that this town is the entrance to   
Isaan.
It was built in the second half of the 17th 
century during the rule of king
