  Phap Van

Vietnam

A statue at Dau Pagoda in Thuan Thanh (fig.) of Phap Van, i.e. the Vietnamese-Buddhist goddess of the clouds, a feminine genie, whom –due to her association with the Buddha– is now also referred to as the buddha of the clouds. She is performing a varada mudra with the left hand, while someone has placed a colourful cloth lotus flower in both her hands, which is reminiscent of a ruyi (fig.).
