  Phraya Surin Phakdi (Chiangpum)

 

Thailand

A statue commemorating Chiangpum, holding a kho ngao. He was a local resident of Meuang Prathai Saman, who presented a White Elephant caught in the wild to the royal court in Thonburi, and was consequently bestowed with the royal title Luang Surin Phakdi. The city was renamed Surin and he became its governor under the title Phraya Surin Phakdi Sri Narong Changwang (fig.). He is generally regarded as the founder of Surin.
