  Eight Lokapalas of Mahayana Buddhism

Thailand

The interior of the Chinese temple Wat Boromaracha Kanchana Phisek Anuson in Nonthaburi province, in the district of Bua Thong, which means 'Golden Lotus', shows a golden lotus flower with in its center, where the seeds are located, the Sakyamuni Buddha, encircled by eight Lokapalas of Mahayana Buddhism.

Each one is displayed on a different lotus petal and presides over a certain point or intervening direction of the compass. Besides this, the inner walls of this building are decorated with thousands of small Buddha images (fig.), said to represent the words spoken by the Buddha and each one believed to radiate a fraction of the Buddha's energy.
