  Wat Pah Khlong 11

Thailand

The ubosot of Wat Pah Khlong 11 in Pathum Thani, is located in the middle of a pond and surrounded by four guardian nagas. Inside, the teak edifice houses a Buddha image seated in the lotus position with a vitarka mudra. It is topped with a chattra or chat, i.e. a  multi-layered royal umbrella, and flanked by four disciples, i.e. two on either side.

This picturesque temple is entirely associated with the naga (fig.), the mythical serpent here represented with multiple heads, which is the guardian of the Buddha as well as the protector of the earthly waters, whereas beneath the earth it is said to guard minerals and gems.

The tails of the guardian nagas that flank the wooden bot are entwined in the middle of the islet and on either side. Also seen here is one of its rather unique bai sema of a natural riverbed rock in a shape reminiscent of the naga or a water wave, an allusion to the former's association with water.
