  Wat Wang Wiwekaram

Thailand

The gilded satellite pagoda of Wat Wang Wiwekaram is a landmark of Sangkhlaburi (fig.). It is built in the style of the Maha Bodhi pagoda in Bodh Gaya and can be seen from afar towering over Khao Laem reservoir (fig.).

The pagoda is built on a raised platform and can be reached by a spiral staircase. From the surrounding balcony a closer look at the pagoda reveals its many corners, projections, dents and niches, many of which are adorned with Buddha images in different poses.

Here, visitors try to gain merit by throwing small coins into an elevated niche that holds a white stone Buddha image, and as one attempt might not be enough many are seen scrambling the floor in search for their coin that has bounced back from the wall.
