The aerial roots of a ficus tree hanging down from its main branches take in moisture from the surrounding air which in the tropics is often high in humidity.

 

Here, the somewhat shorter aerial roots of another kind of tree, yet with the exact same purpose, i.e. to absorb humidity from the sky.
