HISTORY & MONARCHY

  chattra

Thailand

The chattra or chat is the  multi-layered royal umbrella, a symbol of royalty, that stands at the origin of the bell-shaped pagoda called chedi, which became a more permanent form of the cone-shaped umbrella which was traditionally placed on the tomb of a king after his demise, indicating it to be the burial place of a king. The  throne in this picture is Phra Racha Banlang Pradap Muk in Dusit Maha Prasat (fig.), the oldest building in the compound of the Grand Palace, which was commissioned by King Rama I.
