This tree, with the binomial botanical name Spondias mombin and known in Thai as makok, stands at the origin of the name for Bangkok.

 

The name, which is composed of the words bang, i.e. a riverside village, and makok, and refers to a place north of today's centre where the capital was formerly founded.
