  Rizophora mangrove (buttress roots)

Thailand

Rizophora trees are a species of mangrove which is typified by large buttress roots, that strengthen the surface ground.

These distinctive, stilt-like roots form a natural shelter against predators for many animals, both in and above the water.  Fallen leaves will decompose and become food for many creatures, from micro-organisms to small aquatic animals, such as shrimps, crabs and fish.
