  naga-bridge

Thailand

This so-called naga-bridge at Thevasataan Uthayaan Phra Phi Kaneht (fig.), consists of a three-headed naga with an overall red body and a five-headed naga with a mainly green body.

Together they have eight heads, perhaps a reference to the Eightfold Path of Buddhism. To a lesser extend, their skins also have several other colours, together said to represent a rainbow (fig.), a feature associated with water, of which the naga is the protector.

Since the naga is the guardian of the Buddha, as well as the protector of the earthly waters (fig.), bridges at Buddhist temples are usually adorned with nagas, allowing for a safe passage over the water.
