Pla salid  is nearly a whole year round breeder and hence an appreciated food fish, that is usually salted and sun-dried (fig.) before being consumed.

The annual production of Trichogaster pectoralis, known in English as Snakeskin Gourami, amounts to about 13,000 tons and covers about 20 percent of the total annual freshwater fish farming production in Thailand.
