NATURE & GASTRONOMY

  spittlebug's nest

Thailand

In their nymph stage, spittlebugs produce a cover of frothed-up plant sap, which resembles spit, and hides the nymph from the view of predators, insulates it against daytime heat, and provides moisture, to prevent the nymph from drying up, while the acrid taste of the plant sap deters predators.
