Common Buzzard

Common name for a species of medium-sized to large bird of prey, with the scientific designation Buteo buteo and of which there are several subspecies. Whilst its range covers both Europe and Asia, eastern species, such as the Steppe Buzzard (Buteo buteo vulpinus), breed from eastern Europe to the Far East, including southeastern Asia, but excluding Japan (where the subspecies Buteo buteo japonicus is resident), and the Himalayan Buzzard (Buteo buteo burmanicus - fig.), which winters across the Himalayan region and western China.
