		The navy compound 
		
	      
		features  
		
			      several 
		barracks, hangars and dry-docks, 
		where boats used by the Royal Thai Navy are built, repaired and 
		maintained, as well as a Buddhist temple called 
		
		
		Wat Wongsamoon Wihaan (fig.), 
		and the 
			
			Royal Dockyard Museum

		The Naval Dockyard was established by King  
			      
			      Rama I 
		in the early days of his reign (1782-1809 
		AD), in the vicinity of the 
		
		Thonburi Palace 
		(fig.), 
		the residence of King 
			      
			      Taksin, 
		and adjacent to an area where King Rama I had his own initial palace 
		built (fig.). 
		During the reign of King 
		
			      
		Rama V, 
		 
		the Naval Dockyard was further developed. In 1883, factories were built 
		and in 1888 a large wooden dry-dock was built 
		to the south of 
		
		Wat Rakhang 
		(fig.). It is also known as the Royal Dockyard and in Thai it is called Uh 
		
			
		Reua  
		
		
		
		Luang
		
		(อู่เรือหลวง).
