Striped Red Mullet

Common name for a species of goatfish in the family Mullidae. Though usually described as found in the seas around Europe and with the scientific designations Mullus surmuletus and Mullus fuscatus, the oriental variety found in Southeast Asia seems to be a yet unlisted subspecies, and could perhaps be referred to as the Oriental Striped Red Mullet. The oriental Striped Red Mullet has a length of about 20-25 centimeters and its silvery-white body with dark greyish back is covered in diffuse blood-red smudges. In addition, it has longitudinal yellow stripes that run along the top half of the body. The red smudges usually cover also the tail and fins, and they turn the sclera of the eye red and the yellow stripes brownish-black where they meet.
