The escutcheon of
Pattani
shows the cannon of
naang paya Tani. It has, since the reign of
Rama I, been the symbol (kuh
bahn kuh meuang) of Pattani. In 1785 royal troops were
fighting against the Burmese in the western provinces. After this campaign the troops retreated to
Songkhla
where they heard about the rebellion of Pattani against
Rattanakosin.
The troops recaptured the city and confiscated two cannons. They offered
the largest one (fig.), having a length of 3
wah (6 meters) and named ‘Phaya Thani’, to the king.
