Spectacled Spiderhunter

Common name for a species of passerine bird with the scientific designation Arachnothera flavigaster. It belongs to the family Nectariniidae, which also encompasses Sunbirds, a similar bird species yet with shorter bills. Adult Spectacled Spiderhunters have olive backs and brownish wings, with some darker colouring towards the lower back, wing tips and tail, a blackish, thick, broad-based bill that curves downward, a broad yellow eyering, and a prominent yellow ear-patch. It is similar to the Yellow-eared Spiderhunter, but with 21.5 to 22 centimeter somewhat larger than the former which is around 18 centimeters tall, has a thinner eyering, a drooping eye-patch, and a slenderer bill. The Spectacled Spiderhunter is often found feeding on the nectar of the Flame of the Forest (fig.), which it can easily reach with its long, downward-curved bill that can reach deep into these large flowers.
