  Tian An Men

China

Tian An Men Guang Chang, is a 440,000m˛, rectangular public square in Beijing, which is purportedly large enough to accommodate some 600,000 people.

Tian An Men, i.e. the ‘Gate of Heavenly Peace’ is the main entrance to the Forbidden City (fig.) at Tian An Men Square.

  Tian An Men

The inclusion of the word Tian, which means ‘Heaven’, stems from the fact that it is the location where the leaders are. The Emperors of the past, who were referred to as Wang, were seen as the liaisons between Heaven and Earth, who ruled with a mandate from Heaven. Hence Tian An Men Square is also the location of the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, i.e. the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, as well as the Great Hall of the People, which is used as the legislative assembly hall of the government of the People's Republic of China.
