TRADITIONS & UTENSILS

  kohm loy

Thailand

A kohm loy or ‘floating lantern’ (fig.) being launched in Nan province. According to Buddhist tradition, these paper lanterns are lit and released into the sky as offerings to Chulamanie, a stupa containing hair from the Buddha in Tavatimsa heaven, though many do it just for fun. The tradition is popular, but also controversial due to the fire risk. On special occasions where hundreds of lanterns are released they can also create a hazard for aviation.
