  Konagamana

Myanmar

A large image of the Konagamana Buddha, located at the East Gate of Ananda Phaya in Bagan. The image is made of solid teakwood and covered with gold leaf. It is in a standing pose with a mudra typical of Theravada Buddhist Myanmar (fig.) and barely known in the iconography of other Buddhist countries.

It represents the Buddha with his arms hanging at his side, with one hand holding onto his robe and the other holding a small nutlike sphere between thumb and middle finger, which is described to be a sa-moh (fig.), i.e. the medicinal fruit of the gall-nut tree and used as a herbal medicine. The pose is hence believed to represent the Buddha offering the dhamma as a cure for suffering.
